INFLUENCE

Influence is a way to gain power, money and position. It is, without a doubt, the most valuable commodity in the game. Influence is measured in favours, rated in ascending order of effectiveness, from one to nine. Favours are used to modify GM die rolls which represent the decisions of NPCs. Once used to influence a decision a favour is expended.

Levels of influence
The influence table lists the class of favour needed to obtain a die roll modification of 1 on the decisions of a NPC of specific rank or position. A favour of a higher class than the one listed will have a greater effect: one additional die roll modification for each level the favour is above the minimum necessary. In addition, two favours of the same class may be combined to produce one favour of the next higher class. More than one favour can be brought to bear on a particular decision, and the die roll modification may be either additive or subtractive, depending on the character’s wishes.

Influence may be used to seek or block appointments, aid the prosecution or the defence in trials, force resignations and many other purposes outlined in specific rules.

Sources of influence
Influence may be received by virtue of a character’s social standing, from his mistress or from various appointments. Mistresses grant one favour per year to their lovers, of the class listed under normal influence. Influential mistresses possess one additional favour per year (see female companionship). Wives have the same level of influence, but the influence is renewed each season. Favours for social level and appointments are received once per season.

Characters may save favours received from NPCs indefinitely and those from mistresses for the duration of the affair. All other influence may not be saved beyond the season in which it was received.
