Setting notes

Somewhere that I can drop my notes as a preliminary. Also where you can put stuff that you find out 'in game'. Y'know, so I don't forget...

Castes

There are three castes among Wraith society:

Bright Caste wraiths are recently dead. They have all their Fetters intact and are often still remembered by the living.

Grey Caste wraiths are either long dead but with powerful and ancient Fetters or are remembered by a large portion of society. They are often referred to as 'New Lords'.

Dark Caste wraiths are those wraiths who have lost their Fetters, but hang on in the Underworld as a result of a lasting legacy in the Living World. They are sometimes called the 'Old Lords'.

The three castes all have representatives in the three Great Halls of the Palace of Westminster. Brights meet in the Commons, Greys meet in the Lords and Darks meet in the Sepulchre. Representatives are chosen seemingly at random from among the population of L'Undone by the masked messengers of the Seven Sisters, the ever silent agents/messengers/enforcers known as the Sisters of Mercy. While an equal number of Brights, Greys and Darks are chosen, Brights only ever get one vote on policy, Greys get three and Darks get five votes and while the representative houses cannot set policy, the Seven Sisters can often be swayed by public opinion.

To play a representative is a 3 point Merit "Bright Representative".

The Seven Houses

The Seven Houses of L'Undone to which each wraith belongs are the adopted names of their founders, the secretive Seven Sisters and also the names of rivers in the Living World equivalent, London.

Walbrook - the cictims of Old Age are claimed by this House. They gain familiarity with Inhabit, Phantasm and Argos. Symbol - An hourglass, full on the bottom.

Fleet - the victims of Madness are claimed here. They gain power over Castigate, Moliate and Argos. Symbol - An eye impaled on a spike.

Tyburn - those who die by Violence are owned by Tyburn. They are known for the powers of Outrage, Flux and Argos. Symbol - A bloody heart, impaled by a sword.

Serpentine - The victims of Fate are owned by Serpentine which is also called Westbourne by some. They alone do not use Argos, but rely on Mnemosynis, Intimation and Fatalism. Symbol - the Ourouboros.

Brent - here dwell the victims of Accident in all its many forms. They learn the value and cost of things and are known for Embody and Usury as well as Argos. Symbol - A broken scale/balance.

Neckinger - death by Disease consigns one to Neckinger. These wraiths learn to master the arcanoi of Lifeweb, Puppetry and Argos. Symbol - A skull with a worm in one eye.

Effra - those unfortunates who died of Despair are claimed here. Their loss grants them familiarity with Keening, Pandemonium and Argos. Symbol - a shattered cup.

The Seven Sisters
The Seven Sisters are the undisputed rulers of L'Undone. Sometimes working in concert, sometimes in opposition to one another, the Seven Sisters are rumoured to be Queens of England one and all. Others suggest that that too is merely a cover story. The Seven Sisters do not speak to their underlings directly. Each has a Chamberlain who acts as her voice, and commands a contingent of the mysterious Sisters of Mercy. Even seeing one of the Seven Sisters outside of an official event is considered a momentous occasion, although there are rumours that they walk abroad disguised as Sisters of Mercy.

The Seven Sisters will sometimes reward followers with a title of rank by delivering a letter affixed with their seal. The ranks are:
X - Squire
XX - Knight
XXX - Count/Baron
XXXX - Earl
XXXXX - Duke

This counts as a background and equivalates to a mix of Status/Resources/Influence but is not as good as any single one of those.

The Sisters of Mercy
The Sisters of Mercy are a mixture of messenger, police, assassin and nun, each dedicated to the silent service of the Seven Sisters who founded their order. Ignore one of the Sisters of Mercy at your peril as all are accomplished warriors and mystics as well as respected agents of the Seven Sisters and all are equipped with soulforged artifacts. Highly distinctive in their glossy black habits, faces covered by delicate seeming porcelain masks with no nose or mouth, a Sister of Mercy never speaks, only delivers a written message or some other form of message...

Circles
A Circle is an organised unit of wraithly society. Made up of representatives of potentially different Castes and Houses, the Circles act as social clubs, corporations, heirarchies and military orders. Circles often Reap the Caul of new wraiths in order to invite them to join or in less reputable cases, to enslave them. Part of joining a Circle includes taking the Brand, a Moliated mark that shows the wraith as an etablished member of a Circle and not open to enslavement by order of the Seven Sisters.

RH Associates
RH associates is an old school British corporation, dating back to the turn of the 20th century. Modelled on organisations such as the East India Company and the earliest banks, RHA is considered a trustworthy organisation in L'Undone by those who are modern in view and law abiding in nature. Ostensibly, RHA falls under the purview of Lady Serpentine as a result of work done by the founders on her behalf, indeed, one of the Founders is Earl of Stepney at her say so.

RHA is an investigations and detection agency who offer their (expensive) services to those who need help seeking out loved (or hated) ones or property, resolving mysteries or dealing with matters they find themselves unable to resolve.

Day to day operations of RHA are run by John Mount, a former agent of Her Majesties Secret Service and his highly capable assistant, Diana Carriage. Staff don't make jokes about their names, at least not within Ms Carriage's earshot...

Player characters are staff of RHA, a team of investigators and researchers ready to mobilise to deal with cases as they arise. RHA operates five such teams, with four 'in rotation' at any one time and one on leave. The characters are the newest team working for RHA, filling the place left by a group who were Harrowed into Oblivion following a case that led them out of town and into the Mists...

Domains
A Domain is a grant of land ceded to a ranked and titled wraith. Domains vary in size and prestige and are usually centered around a Haunt, sometimes with multiple smaller Haunts dotted throughout. Within a Domain, the law falls into the hands of the wraith who owns the title. This has led to many feifdoms appearing across L'Undone with tense rivalry between them sometimes spilling over into violence, although anything more serious than a scuffle tends to draw the attention of the Sisters of Mercy.

Free Houses
A Free House is a location where most of the traditional rivalries and contests of wraith society are put aside. There are five Free Houses in L'Undone, each is linked to a similar location in the living world. The Free Houses are owned and operated by Keeps, a special rank assigned to wraiths that many suspect of being 'retired' Sisters of Mercy. The Keeps are able to keep their own rules and hours (usually 24) and also to enforce their own peace. All Keeps maintain a staff of bouncers to do just that. General consensus marks the Free Houses as eternally neutral territory and it is the only place where an unBranded wraith can stay safe from recruitment. The five Free Houses are:

The Intrepid Fox (Central)
The New Globe (East)
The Gate Clock (South)
The Kings Head (West)
The Worlds End (North)
